Low flow or no flow is a symptom of something blocking your line. If it turns out that hardened deposits are the culprit, a true deep cleaning can reestablish flow; but what lies underneath those deposits could cause you larger problems in the future. As you know, Under Deposit Corrosion (UDC) is fast-acting, localized corrosion that occurs when an area of metal is deprived of oxygen and the deprivation creates a corrosion cell. What you might not know is this cell of corrosion leads to more corrosion and could lead to an extremely problematic non-containment or leakage situation.

Under Deposit Corrosion is Inevitable

As mentioned, when an area of metal is deprived of oxygen, it forms a pitted or cupped area of corrosion, and this corrosion begins moving rapidly through the metal and on to other areas of the piping system and causes corrosion that is nearly impossible to stop. Most facility managers don’t even realize the corrosion is there until it’s too late and containment has been lost.

The Science of UDC

When the metal is bare and has a higher oxidation potential, it is less stable and more prone to corrosion. This unstable metal loses electrons which is when the corrosion begins. This becomes a vicious cycle of bare metal, oxidation, unstable areas of metal, and then corrosion. This cycle cannot be stopped without an aggressive intervention tactic, such as one of The Motivo Group’s rehab or restoration solutions.

What can you do?

Motivo provides lasting solutions for UDC. We help facilities get ahead of Under Deposit Corrosion by going on-site to clean and restore piping capacity, which can also mean locating and stopping UDC before there is a containment issue. The Motivo Group has proprietary techniques to not only restore capacity, but to find and eliminate the impact of UDC.

What is an ounce of prevention worth?

If you have flow problems, it’s likely you have UDC. Mitigate this before losing containment. Call us to keep your systems clean and flowing at full capacity, and if UDC is there, we will find it and talk about options to eliminate its impact….taken care of in days, not months.
