Our Approach

Implement Lasting Solutions

Leading with Expertise

We solve refinery and petrochemical plant process sewer and pressure piping challenges using a proprietary approach we call Phase Zero.

Motivo Risk Based Prioritization Plan (RBI) PhaseEvaluate & Prioritize Risk

Your facility may be facing large or many oily water, storm or process sewer issues. Which begs the question, “Where should your sewer maintenance and inspection program begin?” You are not alone, it seems every refinery and petrochemical site asks and struggles with this question.

There is never enough time or money to address an entire sewer system in one year. Wondering where to start can impede all progress.

Motivo’s sewer based Risked-Based model allows for effective prioritization of which pipe and structures to address and in which order. We do this all prior to getting into a manhole, catch basin or pipe by collecting data on important risk drivers and then formulating them into a multi-year cleaning and inspection plan that works within the budgetary and time constraints of the facility.

Phase ZeroAssessment

Thorough planning allows for impeccable execution. In Motivo’s Phase Zero on-site assessment, we collect all the information necessary for the effective execution of the project. The plan includes detailed review of available plant drawings; interviewing all relevant staff and site contractors; reviewing, measuring, and documenting all access locations; and the development of a safety/quality plan.

Phase Zero provides our clients with a road map of how to solve their bad actors, restore capacity, and determine if there are mechanical integrity issues. We have found that taking it in phases allows for systematic alignment of priorities and expectations and yields painless resolution for seemingly unending or unsolvable problems with your buried pipe problems.

Phase OneRemote Visual Inspection
& True Cleaning

We always include a thorough and complete video assessment. When we know what is happening, the solution becomes clear. To get a usable and quality assessment True Cleaning, video must be utilized in sync. In order to get actionable information, Motivo integrates our cleaning and inspection approach from “clean to inspect” to “inspect to clean.” Initially we clean using high flow/low pressure to get the pipe flowing and remove the material to allow for quality inspection. When we find hardened material, we utilize a specialty heavy duty cleaning to get the pipe to bare metal.

We investigate your pipelines for problems such as cracks, blocks, corrosion, and other signs of deterioration using video cameras that are inserted into the pipeline. The camera is controlled by an operator in a portable vehicle at the site of inspection. The closed circuit television (CCTV) camera enables video inspection of pipelines such as storm water pipes, sewer pipes, industrial pipes, and potable water pipes.

Reporting allows for easy identification of problem areas and includes clear recommendations for next actions based on risk to plant, personnel, and reputation. These recommendations will include suggested cleaning intervals, re-inspect dates, and rehabilitation where required.

Phase TwoHeavy Duty Cleaning

Our heavy duty cleaning ensures the rehabilitation of lines using:

  • Mechanical Seals
  • Ultra Fiberglass Liner
  • LED Fiberglass Liner
  • High Pressure Kevlar Liner
  • Carbon Fiber Reinforced Liner

Phase Three Trenchless Restoration

Once the mechanical integrity issues are detected and located, trenchless methods such as mechanical spot repair, cured-in-place pipe (CIPP), epoxy lining, slip-lining, and pipe bursting can be used to solve the problem. CIPP is one of the most popular in situ rehabilitation methods we use. This is because it can be inserted via already existing manholes with no extra excavation required. CIPP can also be applied to a wide range of pipes including non-circular pipes and pipes with many bends, offsets, and misaligned joints. All are specifically selected to be suitable for refineries and petrochemical facilities.

Phase Four Risk Based Program Development, System Mapping, & Geo Locating

Our high quality assessment can be precluded with a Risk Based prioritization of your sewer assets. This precursor allows for asset owners to know where to spend their time and money first. It can get overwhelming when you look at a system in totality. The Risk Based methodology takes the consequence of failure of each segment of pipe and each catch basin and combines it with the probability of failure and establishes a priority. We will also include a Failure Modes and Effects (FMEA) which allows for proactivity and reduces reactivity.

Motivo uses a variety of geolocating technological equipment, including GPS and EML, to distinguish underground lines from other objects. The GPS coordinates every 6 inches and uses X, Y, Z coordinates to get the depth of lines. This results in a system map with information that includes the subsurface objects along with the surrounding area including any buildings, mountains, rivers, roads, pipelines, and estuaries. Our accurate system mapping makes it easier when it comes time to repair or replace damaged pipelines.

Why You Should Partner with Motivo

We are partners with clients who engage in a process that leaves customers knowing what is next and in control the whole way through.

Motivo's phased approach solves pipeline infrastructure problems that others think are "impossible." Our turnkey, focused approach balances engineering and creative problem solving. This allows us to diagnose and focus on the root cause(s) of problems and solve the issue(s) once and for all. The Phased approach includes phased cleaning, remote inspection, and actionable reports. This makes it easier for our clients to make decisions on what they need to do to solve and not fix their problems, resulting in long term solutions with significant financial savings over traditional methods.

Motivo's phased approach reduces client's downtime. Our approach finds issue(s) from a micro (pipe) level to the macro (systemic) level, allowing us to know and focus precisely on the right solution(s), using services that may include: Specialty cleaning, trenchless repair, and system mapping. In the end, the results are that our client's plant does not need to worry about an unplanned shutdown, losing containment, or digging up operating units, allowing for continued, smooth operations.

Traditional refinery and petrochemical facility industrial cleaning techniques are not designed to resolve core issues in plant sewers. Instead they are designed to get the pipes flowing again, as quickly and inexpensively as possible and unfortunately, the problem locations reappear on a regular basis. Motivo cleaning and rehabilitation systems are set up to find and resolve the root of our client's problem and provide lasting solutions through our phased approach. Real results guaranteed.
